HOMONYMS AND HOMOPHONES

Whether you call them homophones or homonyms, here is my extensive list of words that sound the same, or almost the same, in American English.  Please be aware of the following:

bullet

While I've included words that sound nearly identical, such as "gamble" and "gambol," I have not included words that sound somewhat alike, such as "elicit" and "illicit."

bullet

Some foreign words, such as "sheik" (note the correct pronunciation), which have become part of the American vernacular, are included.  However, I've omitted others, such as "lieder," which are not as familiar.  This means whether to include certain words is based purely on my own personal preferences.

bullet

I have not given definitions.  It's up to you to look up terms you do not understand.

bullet

Common contractions, such as "they're" are included.

Terms are listed in alphabetical order, according to the "earliest" word; thus, "chute" and "shoot" are listed under C and "knows" and "nose" are under K.
