Summary of Security issues in Wireless Networking
TYPE OF DOCUMENT : A Commercial article by IBM highlighting security issues in wireless networking.
TARGET AUDIENCE : Author assumes that the reader has some previous knowledge of wireless networking . Author also uses latest networking jargon in this article. This article is primarily intended for modern wireless network users , interested in network security .
INTRODUCTION :
Cyber Guerillas are the newest brand of hackers . They primarily hunt
wireless hand held devices that are used to connect to the WLAN. The Author
of this article covers various security issues concerning the
wireless/mobile networking .The Author also points out the
shortcomings of the latest mobile devices and gives some tips to protect
ourselves from Hacking.
SUMMARY:
Wireless Hackers "Cyber Guerillas" intend to deny or destroy wireless
services for users. Who are at Risk? - A business Traveler closing a
business deal , a military personnel receiving military alerts , anybody
using a Wireless device can be at risk.
What do They (Hackers) look for ?
They eavesdrop on conversation , grab pass words ,grab network addresses ,
use our network as a spring board to attack others.
What are our Wireless Security Weak Spots?
Hacking Tools are readily available and can effectively intercept signals ,
rearrange the packets into their proper sequence and find out the access points
of the access points of a high speed network that they can tap into. .
How to Protect Ourselves ?
The Best method is to avoid common pitfalls the wireless networks have like
Frequency channel overlapping, Wi-Fi implementation incompatibility, Hotspots in
Public Places, Unauthorized workstations, System defaults that haven't been
changed .
Conclusion :
This article is a commercial article on wireless security issues . It
gives a good over view of basic security problems in wireless network .It is
mainly helpful to students who are interested in wireless network technology.
Personal Inference : I find this article very interesting and i would recommend all students interested in wireless technology to read this article. I am also planning to present this article in class as a subtopic of my presentation on wireless/Mobil .
